SEOnomer uses a hierarchical structure to organize your SEO content strategy: Clients contain Verticals, Verticals contain Pillars, and Pillars contain Child Pages. Here's how to set everything up.
Step 1: Your First Client
When you first log in, SEOnomer automatically creates a default client for you called "My Business". You can rename this in Settings, or create additional clients if you manage multiple brands or websites.
Pro Tip: Each client represents a separate website or brand. Keep your content strategies isolated by using separate clients.
Step 2: Create Verticals
Verticals are your top-level content categories. Think of them as the main topics your website covers. For example, an e-commerce gardening site might have verticals like:
- Organic Gardening
- Indoor Plants
- Garden Tools & Equipment
To create a vertical, go to the Strategy page and click the "Add Vertical" button. Give it a clear, descriptive name that represents a major topic area.
Step 3: Build Pillars
Pillars are subtopics within each vertical. They represent the core themes you'll build content clusters around. For the "Organic Gardening" vertical, pillars might include:
- Composting Techniques
- Natural Pest Control
- Seasonal Planting Guides
Click on a vertical to expand it, then click "Add Pillar" to create a new pillar within that vertical.
Step 4: Add Child Pages
Child pages are individual content pieces that target specific keywords. Each child page should focus on one primary keyword and support its parent pillar topic. For the "Composting Techniques" pillar:
- "how to start composting at home" (Informational)
- "best compost bins 2024" (Commercial)
- "composting mistakes to avoid" (Informational)
You can add child pages manually, or import them in bulk from keyword research tools. See the Importing Keywords guide for details.
Step 5: Use the Calendar
Once you have child pages, head to the Calendar page to schedule them. Drag and drop pages onto dates, or click to assign publish dates. Use status labels (Planned, Drafting, In Review, Published) to track progress.
